Hello from Houston, TX

Hi,

I am having one heck of a time trying to find this book! My local library does not have. I found 2 on eBay but when the bidding hit $75+ I stopped. I really want to make the Eliz 1 sweater, plus woould like to see what else she has in the book. My KNOW group sent out an email to the members and no one has it either. So I am stuck as to where and when I can make this sweater. The ones I have seen on the blog are just beautiful and the colors are awesome. Anyway Ibest get to my introduction lol.
I'm Cheryl and I am a 100% service-connected disabled veteran, and so is my husband Michael we live in the Houston area of TX. Since I (we) no longer work I need to keep busy with all this free time I now have. We share a beautiful home with Sir Angus Seton and Rita our two small dogs. After a 20+ yr. hiatus I picked up knitting again and I am having the greatest time making gifts for others and family. I have taken classes to learn how to do lace knitting (small scarf), cables and also socks I learned how to make them on my own!! I have many projects on many needles to keep me busy and when I get bored with one I can work on another. I am looking to learn how to spin and hope to start classes in the fall. Presently I have the following projects OTN: Spa Sox ~ D. Bliss Cashmerino; Mystery Stole 3 ~ Zephyr Lace yarn in Mahogany w/Czech Glass Beads in Red Rainbow color (put on the shelf for now), Forest Canopy using 1-ply pure wool fingering yarn from Mirari Crafts an eBay store , from a new friend named Marie. It is a beautiful yarn and the colorway is rich shades of violet, pink and golden yellow.

I finished a shrug for my daughter’s 28th birthdaypresent; I used 3 balls of D. Bliss Stella in #9 Red, which is a silk, rayon and cotton yarn, just finished Forest Canopy Shoulder shawl in Vintage Silk Maiden & Louisa Harding’s Grace and anoaather shrug for a friend in Nashua's Cilantro the bodyy is aqua and the trim is bright white. Other projects on the needles: Bee Fields Shawl, I aim using 100% Merino lace weight from Yarn Tree House and the colorway is Bloom. This colorway reminds me of rainbow sherbet colors lol; 1 more Forest Canopy's; I also make one of a kind jewelry using sterling silver and semi-precious gemstone beads. I also make stitch markers using Sterling Silver and Swarovski Crystals and other types of beads. My DH is going to get the 2 different yarns for me for future projects and also the Honey Bee Stole pattern. Then there is the lacey baby cap that is about half way done. Well I better get moving time for some herbal tea and knitting. I look forward to making some new friends in this group. Have a nice evening all.

Cheryl (or my friends call me CW)

Mary Tudor question

Does "Mary Tudor" have one button or more? In the supplies list, there is only one button, but in the finishing section you read about sewing buttonS. On the other hand, the photos seem to show one button.

What do you think? And how practical would a cardigan with a single button be?

Thanks!

Henry VIII finished

Well I posted a picture of the body a long time ago... then finished "him" in August. "He" was at the Alaska State Fair for 10 days, although I forgot to take my camera and didn't get any pictures. If you want to find out more about him just view at my blog.
My husband is so pleased... I promised him Henry about 5 years ago, so it's been a long wait!

Pick up the Needles

With the warm weather almost over and sight of colder days, I am ready to pickup the needles again. I have taken over the task of leading this group in hope that we can get many many more Tudors done.
I am not exactly sure what I am going to cast on next but the decision will be made soon enough. Tell us what you have on the needles. Have you run into a snag? Show us pictures, pictures and more pictures!
Come on everyone! tell us how your project is going.

Anyone Interested in being Administrator?

There seems to be ongoing interest in continuing this blog as a Knit-along, and I've gotten several new requests lately.
Since I finished knitting my Eliz I and haven't cast on yet, and have no immediate plans to do so for Jane Seymour, I've been very inactive here.

Would anyone else be interested in taking over as Admin and getting this blog KAL active again?

Margaret Tudor

She is finally done. More photos and stats are posted in my blog.

Margaret Tudor was my third project from Tudor Roses. The next one would be Elizabeth I with camel Dunedin. I am now working on adjusting the pattern as I hear and read that it is large and its neck opening is too wide.

Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII

I am new to posting on this blog but am so pleased to be a part of it. I "discovered" it in April, when I was doing a search for Henry VIII because I had just finished my Anne Boleyn cardigan and was about to begin knitting the Henry pull-over. I wanted to see how other knitter's sweaters had turned out. I had the yarn for a long time in my stash, but was a little intimidated by the idea of knitting a fair isle sweater, as I had never done one. It was so much fun, as soon as I finished the cardigan, I got started on the Henry pullover. I would love to do every sweater in Tudor Roses as they are all so lovely.

Now, I just need to get started on poor Henry's sleeves but it has been a little warm to have this big wad of wool on my lap!

Elizabeth I blues

Here she is, almost finished! But... I am not happy with her. At all. I've been a slow finisher, it's taken almost a year, and a lot has happened. I think that my slow pregnant pace has affected my gauge, because the sweater is waaay too big! I cast on for size M, but this is more like a XXL... it works for a pregnant body, apart from the sleeves. Not very funny really, I've tried knitting a swatch and shrinking it in the washing machine, but that took away the pattern. I'll try one more time, and if that doesn't work then I will have to take the pieces apart, measure, zigzag on a sewing machine and Cut!

The book is out of print, however there are a significant number of copies still available. Check Ebay, Jannette at Rare Yarns, or even your local library.

Links are on the sidebar for yarn sources. Alice Starmore has a site, Virtual Yarns, and has available as kits the yarns for
Henry VIII,
Anne of Cleves,
Catherine Parr,
Elizabeth I,
Margaret Tudor,
Henry VII, and a
cushion cover in the Henry VIII motif.
While not the only source, I know that Anne at SheEweKnits will also kit up the yarn for any of the patterns, using, I believe, Jamieson yarns.

Thanks to Sherry for making a button. Please feel free to take it and use it to link back here from your own blog.

Question on Liz 1!

Hi, I am starting to get back on track with my Liz and I have a question for those of you who have finished or at least gone through the first leg. I know I have seen this question, but can't find the archive, so please bear with me if this is redundant. I am through chart B and C and am starting on C for the second time. Will the armholes start in the second repeat of chart C or the third repeat of chart C? That would really be row 67 and 68? I find this a little unclear, so any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks! Sharon

Katherine Kontinuing

How is everyone else doing with the Tudor Roses project? I am still plugging along on Katherine of Aragon. I have knitted part of the sleeve steek. My motivation will probably increase when I begin the sleeves since the end will be in sight. I would love to get an update on the other projects.

By the way, isn't it depressing that Jamieson and Smith is reducing the number of colors it manufactures? I have been trying to figure out how this will effect my future projects.

both panels finished

So I just finished the second panel of my Elizabeth I. And here you can see what is a bad thing about waiting a long time completing your project... the two pieces are Totally Different in gauge. Arrgh... Well well, I have decided that blocking (or something) will help, and I am not going to worry about it yet. Maybe it will look as a front and a back...? On to the sleeves!

10 panels done

Hello

Hello all,

I'm new here, excitedly awaiting my copy of Tudor Roses with my eye on Elizabeth for starters. Reviewing the blog archives and all the lovely photos. Very glad to be here.

Handled some hemptherapy (sp) in LYS today-- a very soft, earthy blue. Maybe too fine for me--I knit tight.

Candace

lots of new interest!

as Marina reminded me recently, we are coming up on the One Year Anniversary of this KAL.

Amazing isn't it?

There has been some wonderful work here, and all of a sudden, recently, I've gotten requests to join. I just sent out 4 invites, and at least 2 before leaving on vacay two weeks ago.

I love seeing the progress.
Of those who've finished, does anyone plan on knitting another design?
Of those who've started, is anyone close to finishing that hasn't posted recently?

I'm so thrilled for Mia, who's expecting, (and still, amazingly enough, knitting along on Liz) ;)

My own update will come soon. Finishing up some sewing that I'm totally involved in right now, then will get back to my knitting.

Started all over again!

So I´ve frogged the back
of Elizabeth I and change needles.
From 3 to 2,5mm and now the
gauge is right!
I´m soo happy, thought I´d
have to take some other yarn
and really didn´t want to.
I really like this soft cotton yarn!
I hope it´ll be alright now and
no more frogging ;)

Queen Catherine Parr is Done!

I was on the finish line, and after intense knitting the last weeks, Queen Catherine Parr - A true Tudor Rose is finished. She is big (but so am I), and long (covers my behind), but fantastic. A great knit, and a very comfortable and nice sweater. Having posted most info (just a bit below) I must correct that the main green yarn was three-threaded and blend. And I added one extra one-thread of varigated yarn to fulfill the master knitters intention to use a sparkle of gold (coppar) in it, but I carried it along all the way. They mixed great, and at long bits it does not show. A fantastic knit, so rewarding to do, and colours turned out great.

A close-up of the neck in a bit sharper photo! It is just such a fantastic knit and pattern, and even if I consider my KAL "done" here, Im definitely going to do some more of her patterns, so what is the next project? That is the big question. Fair-isle is tempting. I will definitely stay on! I will miss the nice pattern, it flows so nice - and is easy to remember, and with some tricks moving one stitch is really a piece of cake. The bubbles took a long time to do, and I have done them a bit different than pattern (a bit bigger). Also I have reworked the pattern to circular, but this is great, it works easy either way, so I parted when the sleeve started. I just do not like doing two colour pattern from the back, much easier (and faster) doing them circular. More pictures and stories on my blog Garngamen (= yarnvulture). Your knitting friend, Sigrid from Sweden.

New here!

Hi everyone!
I´m new to this group so I thought
I´d pop in and present my self.
My name is Margaretha and I
live in Sweden. 41 years old
and at the moment I study
to become a gardener.
I´ve started to knit Elizabeth I from
Tudor Roses and I´ve almost made
the back when I discovered that
it got to big. Sigh!

So now I´m frogging.....
I´ve choosen an swedish yarn,
a mix with cotton and acrylic
wich is soft and perfect for a
summer sweater.
I´ll start all over again with
some other needles and
hopefully it´ll turn out better ;)
I´m knitting on Aberlady too
but that´s on hold right now.
Here´s a picture of my Eliza

Queen Catherine Parr - Progress!

Hi dear Knitting Tudor Roses KAL friends.
I have now worked 2 month on my Catherine Parr, and now I have both the sleeves to go. Im knitting on 3.5 mm needles. Yarn is Swedish Kempe with a one thread blend of Estonian (green) and the Coppar is 2 threads of one-threaded Färgkraft's Bronze and one two-threaded of Swedish spinnery Mojärv's yarn. It is a fantastic pattern, and Im doing the Large (+ some extra stiches), since Im a bit apple-shaped. I must say I have become a true admirer of Alice fantastic pattern during this knit, so Im already planning the next Tudor Rose. Some more pictures on my blog: Garngamen where I also post a lot more comments. /Sigrid from Sweden

Slow progress

I have been awfully quiet here, and I am sorry about that! Through fall, I felt no desire to touch my blue Elizabeth I, but now as spring is approaching, I heard it calling my name :-)
So I just finished the first piece last night (hence bad flash-picture). I immediately cast on for the second, so that it wont take forever to continue.

The urge to make this sweater has somewhat diminished for me, since I'm Pregnant!!! Very unexpected- but still welcome, it's been a while since last time. My youngest will be 7 when the baby comes in August.
But it is still a fun knit, and I really hope and plan to stick with it this spring. The size seems to be right- or at least it will be in the future again. Hopefully.
My regular blog is in Swedish, and wouldn't switch to the new Blogger beta version. So if you want to visit, it is http://miastick.blogspot.com
See ya!

Sarah wrote in the comment section of the initial post on this KAL:
I just ordered the Virtual Yarns Elizabeth I kit. It came today... but it's just yarn, no pattern. Is this right? I was going to join the KAL as soon as I had kit in hand, but obviously this is a bit of a holdup.

The pattern is supposed to come with the yarn in the kit, right?

Sorry Sarah, but No, you need the book. This one isn't the fault of AS. Quoted below directly from the VY site:

Many of our past designs have been inspired by the play of light on land, on water, or on objects both natural and man-made. Such effects are elusive and trying to capture them can be rather like trying to catch sunbeams. When designing our Hebridean colour range we sought to create shades that would glow and shimmer, and allow us to reproduce exactly what we saw in our mind’s eye. These past designs show that our quest succeeded. More will be addedsarah has left a new comment on your post "Ready, Set, Start whenever it suits.":

. Check to see if the original book is needed, or if the design has been republished in a full-colour patterncard.

Elizabeth I

Elizabeth I

The silhouette of this garment was designed to emphasise and enhance the female form - just like the gowns of the Elizabethan era. It has proved quietly popular among women with the figure to carry it off, and several have told me that they got married in it. The colour choice will greatly influence the mood. It looks fresh and breezy shown here in Strabhann. For a regal look worthy of The Virgin Queen, then choose Mara, Red Rattle or Erica. For a light an subtle effect, Driftwood, Spindrift or Fulmar would look particularly good. It is worked straight from the instructions in my book Tudor Roses, which is required to make the garment. Check Ebay. There are also links on the sidebar for places where people have been able to obtain the book.
Last fall the going price for the book was typically $80

Sorry. I don't know if you already have joined the KAL, but I'll send you an email invite

Katherine Off and Running

I have finally received all of the right yarn for my Katherine of Aragon cardigan and have started knitting after a long wait. This pattern uses 5 charts so I made myself some stitch markers with letters corresponding to the chart letters. This has been very helpful although I have finished a full repeat of the charts and which chart I am using is much more obvious. This has been a fun knit so far and I would agree that the colors are quite engaging.

This cardigan is quite long which seems to be out of fashion at the moment. I am not sure if it would look right if I eliminated one repeat of the charts. The length of the cardigan seems to make it look elegant. Any thoughts on that issue?

Katherine, rested.

Here's my Katherine of Aragon. She's well rested from the holidays, since she hasn't been touched in 1 1/2 months. (You know, Marina finishes whole fair isle sweaters faster than I can finish a repeat!)
I love the sweater just the same, though, and hope to give her some more attention soon!
I do love the colors that AS chose for this sweater. I think they are mesmerizing still, no matter how long I've knit on them!

Hi All

We are halfway through the first month of the new year and I was wondering about everyone's progress? My poor Elizabeth became victim of an accident, of the worst kind. She came into work with me, or tried, as I walked out of the garage and noted I felt a bit of a pull, looking back there she was trailing almost one full floor. While I did have my bag, she somehow managed to stay behind in the car. Now she was obviously upset as she was unraveled and a bit dirty, but alas..she has been cast back on...the really bad part was it was the back, yes the completed back sitting on a spare needle but not wanting to be separated from the front always present...so sad...I am very glad I took notes on changes I made as I was using the back as a guide for the front visually...
After the proper greiving time, I finished frogging rewound what was not damaged and moved on. So perhaps she will be the project I bring to Ireland with me next month. We are only going for a few days(had to cancel an earlier European anniversary trip due to issues beyond our control)and had to rebook tickets, so since we are going to Ireland for two weeks in June with children, DH thought the yarn shops should be checked out this trip..
Sorry for being so long winded...
I must say I am tempted to now name my van Henry due to the demise of Elizabeth

Margaret Tudor Update

Congratulations, Sam (tychoish)! Cannot wait to see your Henry VIII photos.

I made some progress on my Margaret Tudor and here are some photos.

I am knitting the smallest size, basically, except for the body width, which is further narrowed by total of 12 stitches, 6 stitches at each side. I will need to lengthen the sleeves to compensate for the narrower shoulder width. Here is a close up, as much I could manage.

So far, I am quite content, but my hands are aching a bit. Need to take a break from this project before I ruin my hands. :)

Are there anyone here knitting Margaret Tudor as well?

Happy knitting!

Finished Object: Henry VIII

Hello Friends!

I have to report that I have finished my Henry VIII, and I did make it in before the new year by a few hours. It's really a delightful sweater. I have some observations to share. Pictures will be forthcoming I hope.

I had to knit an additional half repeat of the pattern on the sleeves. This isn't the first time that I've had to lengthen the sleeves of a Starmore design, and I'm beginning to think that our fair designer didn't know very many people with long-average sized arms. No matter, it's an easy enough problem to fix.

Also, I have the feeling that this sweater is in need of a gusset at the underarm. I followed the pattern to the letter on this garment, and I feel that had I listened to my gut in a few places, I might be slightly more pleased with the shape. That'll learn me.

I also had to block it two times to get it to fit right, but now that It's been properly blocked. I'm feeling pretty good about it. This is a great sweater.

Additionally. Gloss, from Knit picks is an amazing yarn for sweaters, and the price can't be beat.

Cheers,
Sam (tychoish)

Swatching Katherine of Aragon

Hello! I am a new member who will be joining the Katherine of Aragon knitters. I am planning to use Jamieson and Smith's 2-ply which finally arrived after approximately 2 months. I ordered it directly from Jamieson and Smith and they were making a new batch of FC55 which held my order up for awhile.

So after my lengthy wait, I immediately swatched the pattern only to discover that my heliotrope substitution is too bright. (Heliotrope is the third background color down, i.e. bright pink.) I have decided to try Jamieson's orchid instead so I am once more waiting for yarn before I begin. Since I am ordering within the country I am hoping for less of a wait.

Wish me a speedy delivery so that I can finally get started on my sweater!
